Chapter 38-43- The end of the novel

Fold your paper into 4 boxes. Label them, one for each chapter (front and back) for a total of 6 chapter boxes.

For each square, provide 2 important plot points, 1 setting (including atmosphere), and one visual that sums up the main ideas.

The leftover boxs are for you to write a theme statement and explanation.. Remember what we talked about yesterday.

Don’t forget to be working on FW#6!

Tuesday 10 Oct- English 9H

As we near the end of the book it’s time to start thinking about theme.

Write a short (3-5 sentence) paragraph stating a possible theme and explanation of that theme.

We will discuss the end of the book tomorrow.

Friday 29 Sept- English 9H

First, let’s review flat/round and static/dynamic characters (slide 40).

Then we need to talk about the end of Stage 2. OMG!

Last, let’s examine another way to discuss characterization.  Lesson idea credit to my awesome student teacher last year.

Thursday 28 Sept- English 9H

There was a really interesting sentence in the section we read yesterday. Please copy the second sentence down in your Author Craft section of your composition book.

  • We entered into a melancholy little square that looked to me like a flat burying ground. I thought it had the most dismal trees in it, and the most dismal sparrows, and the most dismal cats, and the most dismal houses that I had ever seen.

Now, try it! Create a sentence with a similar structure. Topic is up to you.

You may use the rest of the hour to work on reading the text and Friday #4.

Tuesday 19 Sept- English 9H

Friday #3 is posted in Classroom. Sorry for not having that up on Monday.

In today’s reading (page 32), we finally meet the mysterious Miss Havisham. She is a famous character in literature and is often referenced in other works.

  • What are some things we notice about her right away?

  • What did you notice about how Estella treats Pip.

  • What did you notice about the setting of this chapter?

Dickens uses symbols, person, place, or object that stands for something beyond itself, to show us more about Miss Havisham and Satis House. There is a writing assignment in Classroom about symbols. Use text evidence from this section to complete the assignment.
