Friday 29 Sept- English 9H

First, let’s review flat/round and static/dynamic characters (slide 40).

Then we need to talk about the end of Stage 2. OMG!

Last, let’s examine another way to discuss characterization.  Lesson idea credit to my awesome student teacher last year.

Thursday 28 Sept- English 9H

There was a really interesting sentence in the section we read yesterday. Please copy the second sentence down in your Author Craft section of your composition book.

  • We entered into a melancholy little square that looked to me like a flat burying ground. I thought it had the most dismal trees in it, and the most dismal sparrows, and the most dismal cats, and the most dismal houses that I had ever seen.

Now, try it! Create a sentence with a similar structure. Topic is up to you.

You may use the rest of the hour to work on reading the text and Friday #4.

Today we will first take a look at some sentence level analysis. Consider the sentence below.

He was walking, running, and jumping for joy.

Parallel structure (parallelism)

refers to a grammatical or structural similarity between sentences or parts of a sentence; it involves an arrangement of words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs so that elements of equal importance are equally developed and similarly phrased

Now, try it. Create a sentence using this parallel structure. Is there a place in your Identity Essay that could use such a construction?

Columnist Draft- Please complete the form in Classroom regarding your columnist. We will work with another piece from this writer next week.

Grounding question- Write about a time when you felt like you were doing something well. It doesn’t have to be a huge thing. Just a time when you felt good about what you were doing.

Text- page 56. Here we find out what Pooh really means when he says “Cottleston Pie”.

Today we will finish with Cottleston Pie. We begin on page 50 with a discussion of “Why does a chicken, I don’t know why.” Keep up with your notes!

Go ahead and start thinking about Friday #4. At least read the poem and start thinking about it.
